When people have imbalanced access to work, housing, healthcare, ownership, education, et cetera, inequality is present. Inequality affects everyone in the world and comes from people’s fears of one another and other people’s opinions. Inequality comes in many forms, expressed through viewing wage gaps between men and women and between races in the terms of the conflict theory. As Karl Marx expressed through the conflict theory, every citizen in a society is struggling to gain access to resources. This competition exists not only between classes, but within each class as every person strives to make their life and decedents’ lives better. In an interview with a male kindergarten teacher, Christine Williams discovered that having a man teach young children is widely diliked upon: â€Å"One parent said, ‘How can he love my child; he’s a man.’ The second thing that I recall, [the principal] said, ‘He has a beard†¦ Aren’t you concern ed about homosexuality?’† (Williams). Parents make conclusions about this teacher based merely on gender. If the teacher were female, the parents would express no concerns about whether she loved their child or if she was homosexual, though neither men nor women have a greater predisposition for being homosexual. Lillian Rubin interviewed Mary Anne, wife of Tim Walsh, a white, 33-year-old construction worker, which demonstrated inequality through criticism of peoples’ race and ethnicity. When asked why the immigration of whites is different than the immigration of blacks, Mary Anne reported, â€Å"Oh, it’s different, all right. When my people came, the immigrants were all white. That makes a big difference.† When asked why she thought it made a difference, she stated, I don’t know; it just is, that’s all.
